TEAMING: Collaborative Practices for Interpreters

0.5 CEUs | ~5 Hours Total Format: 3.5 hours of video (22 focused segments) + 1.5 hours of self-paced engagement (interactive prompts, journals, and reflections). Language & Access: Spoken/written English with captions; written and interactive participation. TEAMING: Collaborative Practices for Interpreters Explores what it means to move beyond simply working alongside another interpreter and toward truly collaborative practice. Through an engaging, conversational format, interpreters examine the choices, communication, and dynamics that shape effective teams before, during, and after an assignment. Topics include pre-assignment prep, establishing expectations, co-creating the message, active feeds, switching strategies, team notes, debriefing, and navigating both familiar and new team relationships. The workshop explores teaming across diverse settings and configurations—including Deaf/hearing teams, VRS, virtual interpreting, platform and theatrical work, large teams, and mentoring interns. Participants will also examine how to advocate for additional teammates, Deaf interpreters, and teams that reflect the cultural and lived experiences of the setting. Participants are invited into an ongoing dialogue: share perspectives in ASL or English, learn from colleagues, reflect privately, and refine practical teaming strategies. The goal: Prepare intentionally, communicate openly, support actively, adapt collaboratively, and exit every assignment a stronger team interpreter.
