How to Talk the Talk: Vocabulary Every Theatrical Interpreter Should Know

Working in the theater requires more than interpreting skills. It requires an understanding of the environment, terminology, people, and technical elements that make a production possible. This workshop provides interpreters with a practical introduction to the world of theater and the knowledge they need to feel more confident working in theatrical settings. Participants will explore essential theater terminology, including stage directions, the apron, house and wings, nightlines, performance vocabulary, and technical terms. The workshop also examines interpreter placement, sightlines, lighting and illumination, and how to recognize and communicate concerns that may affect visual access for Deaf audience members. You’ll also learn about the key members of a theater production team, what each person does, and—perhaps most importantly—who to contact when you have a question or need something addressed before a performance. Whether you are new to theatrical interpreting or looking to strengthen your existing knowledge, this workshop will help you better understand the theatrical environment, communicate more effectively with production staff, and arrive at your next performance feeling more prepared.
