Anchors & Access: Life as a Cruise Interpreter

0.3 CEUs 🌊 Set sail with interpreter Stephanie Kanieski and explore the reality of cruise ship interpreting — from applying and packing to shows, drills, excursions, and teaming. Leave with practical tips, a clearer sense of whether this work is a good fit for you, and strategies for centering Deaf passengers onboard. Ever wondered what it’s really like to work as an interpreter on a cruise ship? Anchors & Access: Life as a Cruise Interpreter offers a practical, honest look at cruise interpreting — from first email to final disembarkation. Led by New Jersey interpreter Stephanie Kanieski, this 3-hour workshop walks participants through the full life cycle of a cruise assignment: deciding whether it is a good fit, applying and negotiating contracts, packing and preparing, navigating ship life, and managing the work itself — including shows, muster drills, shore excursions, daily interactions, and Deaf/DeafBlind access at sea. Participants will explore cruise culture, team dynamics, and how to balance professionalism with being someone your team and Deaf passengers genuinely want to travel with. Throughout the workshop, Deaf experiences are centered, and the crucial role of Deaf interpreters onboard is highlighted. Participants will leave with practical tips, a clearer sense of personal fit, and concrete strategies for providing ethical, effective access while thriving as part of an onboard team.
